Organ and tissue donation and transplantation are processes that are inseparably connected with one another.
Transplantation is a surgical procedure whereby a damaged organ is replaced with a healthy one recovered from a deceased or living donor. For patients with irreversibly damaged organs as a consequence of various diseases, in whom all other treatment options have been exhausted, organ transplantation represents the only effective treatment method.

Kidneys
  • A kidney can be donated by a living or a deceased donor.
  • Good tissue compatibility between donor and recipient is required for transplantation.
  • Only one kidney is usually transplanted.
  • Simultaneous transplantation of both kidneys is possible in special cases within the “old-for-old” programme, whereby good combined function of both kidneys is preserved.

Heart
  • Heart transplants come from deceased donors.
  • Blood group compatibility between donor and recipient, and appropriate organ size are required.
  • It is possible to transplant only heart valves.

Liver
  • The whole liver or part of the liver of a deceased donor, or part of the liver of a living donor is transplanted.
  • Blood group compatibility between donor and recipient, and appropriate organ size are required.

Pancreas
  • Pancreas transplants come from deceased donors.
  • The pancreas is usually transplanted together with a kidney.
  • It is possible to transplant the pancreatic islets, which are groups of different hormone-releasing cells.
  • Blood group compatibility between donor and recipient is required for transplantation.
